The Long cherished desire of Devanga Community people of Aruppukottai providing higher education to the economically weaker section of the people who live in and around Aruppukottai was fulfilled by the establishment of ‘Devanga Arts College’ in the year 1970.
Our College started to function with Pre University Classes with 4 sections, having the strength of 320 students.
In the year 1972, from the UGC, the college was accorded recognition under 2(F) and 12(B).
The college is affiliated to Madurai Kamaraj University. Gradually new courses were started. The following statement shows the chronological progress in promoting higher education.
* 1970 – 71 – B.Sc., Mathematics, B.A., History and B.Com.,
* 1979 -80 – B.A., - English, B.Sc., - Physics, and B.Sc., - Chemistry
* 1980 – 81 – B.A., - Tamil
* 1982 – 83 – B.A., - Economics
In the year 1995, the college shifted from its old campus to its new 40 acre campus. Since 1995, the college gained a new face lift in developing infrastructure that suites the needs of the students as well the university.
As a part of developmental activity, the college slowly introduced the Self – Financing courses in the year 1994-95. Under Self – financing scheme, UG courses B.Com (CA)., B.B.A., B.C.A., B.Sc (CS), B.Sc (IT)., and PG courses M.Com (CA)., M.Sc (Physics)., were introduced.
In the year 2003, NAAC peer team visited the college. The college was accredited and Graded ‘B+’.
In the annals of academic achievement, the college acquired the status of Autonomy in the year 2007 from UGC.
In the year 2008, The State Government of Tamilnadu decided o introduce the ‘Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)’ in all over the state at college level. The college accepting the norms and conditions proposed by the Government of Tamilnadu keeping an eye on the autonomous status, gets into this new structure from this academic year onwards.
From 2010-11 onwards M.Sc.,(Chemistry) and M.Phil.,(Physics) Programmes are started.
In the process of fulfilling the dreams of the founding fathers, the college carefully leads the society into an enhanced academic status to greater heights of academic glory and achievements.
